As well as the obligatory Swiss army knives, the troops were armed with assault rifles - however, they had no ammunition, Mr Reist said.

And I thought the Swiss were halfway sane.

Those who ignore the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.

This happened before, in 1992. The Swiss Army Reserve were on training maneuvers and bivouacked after dark. When the sun rose it turned out part of the unit were camped on the driveway of some citizen of Lichtenstein and he couldn’t get his car out to get to work, so he summoned the policeman from Vaduz, who ordered the Swiss Army to move their butts off the sovereign territory of the Grand Duchy of Liechtenstein. It made the papers that time, too.

The entire episode reminds me of the movie ‘The Mouse that roared’ except Liechtenstein should have been doing the invading.
