Pictures!

We were supposed to get a big nor’easter, and that fizzled out. Drizzle. A little snow. I’d planned to post pictures of feet of snow, but hey, it didn’t happen. It didn’t rain much, but we got humidity. Think humidity doesn’t effect the volume of beaten egg whites? Think again–this is a 5-white meringue:

Sad. And speaking of sad, I think I’ve said before that there are things you’d expect to find here, but don’t. Like back in Indiana, in any store you can find seriously great Amish noodles, but they were nowhere to be seen when we first moved here. I did find one brand at Wal-Mart on the bottom shelf, hidden behind some other stuff, and they’re not bad, but they only come in broad (or at least Wal-Mart only stocks the broad noodles). But Friday at Wegman’s, there was a new display–with these:

The question was what to do with them, but since I had this gallon of stock:

I made chicken and noodles–with mashed potatoes, of course.

While I was snapping pictures, I thought I’d snap a few that might be helpful, if you’re looking for Chinese ingredients. Here’s the wine rice, which isn’t wine, but fermented rice (or so Kuo says–it obviously has no alcohol content, so how it’s made exactly, I do not know, but the taste is vaguely like a sweet dessert wine, sorta kinda but not really):

And here’s the dark soy I’ve been buying for years now in big jugs, Pearl River Bridge. They make good light soy too:

And Chinese black vinegar, wonderful stuff:

Now for the interesting part. I’ve gotten some interesting birthday presents, but this takes the cake, so to speak–though I didn’t know what it was until I put it together:

Know what it is? Neither did I:

Still not sure? Let’s turn it sideways:

I do know some interesting people.
