Hitchens eviscerates a sniveling, terrorist-supporting leftist (hat tip to David Thompson):

    I am extremely impressed.

It is not often I hear someone so incredibly well spoken, especially in a somewhat improvisational debate setting.

After reading Zombietime’s account of the evening I was struck by the strange twist in which a liberal danced the watusi trying to both denigrate Western religion and support Islamic fanatics, while a non-religious individual defended moral absolutes and Christians.

I’ve found myself in that position more frequently lately. Though I’m an atheist, I’ve been defending and supporting Christianity as a force for good in the world (with the understanding, of course, that any religion can be used for destruction in the wrong hands). It feels a bit odd, but I believe it to be reasonable. Great, now I’ve got material for a post.

    Great find Professor!

Hitch is usually good for such a beatdown. Few have such knowledge, both historical and contemporary, to provide proper evidence for their arguments.

One can judge Hitchens’ effectiveness by noticing how often his opponents end up in what I call the “101 Corner,” which is that state of [pseudo]intellectualism in which a debater sounds like he’s a college freshman in a 101-level class. The leather-jacketed opponent’s comment about ‘White Man’s Burden’ is one of those low-hanging talking points yanked from a poorly-written Western Civilization 101 syllabus.

Unfortunately, too few people a) see exchanges like this or b) evaluate each debater’s content in a disinterested way. At least it ensures that Hitchens will have no shortage of work from now until the end of time, but I’d prefer if people just watched, listened, thought - and then allied with the truth.

The “White man’s burden?” What the hell is that, and how does it relate here? Up until recently, Arabs and Persians where considered to be white, or “other”.

I just cannot feel guilt for producing the fairest system available to get ahead on one’s own ability. With the flaws of our past, and the flaws that still exist, we still provide the best and easiest way for any individual to achieve any goal.
