Let’s Play Guess Who’s Defending The Liberal

Published by rightwingprof at 1:19 pm under *, Conservatism

The Chancellor at UC Irvine had offered the deanship of UCI’s brand new law school to Erwin Chemerinsky, then abruptly withdrew the offer. The reason?

Chemerinsky’s political views would make him a target for criticism from conservatives.

But the point here is, well, who’s objecting to this? Here’s a list:

So what do all of the above have in common? Class? Anybody?

They’re conservatives.

I get the Inside Higher Ed RSS feed every day (I only subject myself to the idiocy printed there if I see something intriguing on the feed), and although there may be some objection there, it hasn’t been in the feeds.

So let me chime in on the issue. This is crap. Drake made the offer, all the way to negotiating the salary and telling Chemerinsky he was hired. Drake had damned well better apologize, and give Chemerinsky the job. I don’t care how nutso-batso left the man is.

Some of that list aren’t really conservatives, though. Mr Reynolds is really more of a libertarian. VDH would probably be a Lieberman Democrat, if those sort were still welcome in that party.

The Powerline guys and Captain Ed are. Maybe Hugh Hewitt, but he pretty much sticks with the Republican party on most issues, rather than being conservative.

Dear RightWing Prof: The trouble is, if Mr. C is reinstated, how can he work with Chancellor Drake? How could he trust the Chancellor not to run off the rails again? It works the other way too: Mr. Drake would be perpetually uncomfortable, to say the least, with Mr. C., who would be a walking reproach to the Chancellor, a sign of the Chancellor’s witlessness. No, if Mr. C. is brought to Irvine, Chancellor Drake will have to go. That would be a just outcome, but I bet it will not happen. The Chancellor will stay, Mr. C will not come to Irvine, and very probably, the Law School will be aborted. How can any donor, let alone accreditation committee, have any faith in the school after this?

    Sincerely yours,
    Gregory Koster

Drake should apologize as soon as the libs (including the President) at Duke apologize for dragging the name of those lacrosse kids through the mud.

The offer had contingencies, it wasn’t formally signed by both parties yet. An employer promised to hire an employee and then rescinded the offer. It happens everyday in the real world. Get over it. I thought lawyers had backbone, or is that only when its someone else’s backbone that needs stiffening?

I suspect this was a ploy on the part of the left in an attempt to create a cause celebre and let leftists accuse conservatives defending academic freedom of being hypocrites.

    It didn’t work.
