Just In Time For …

Sleet tonight, snow tomorrow, and snow Monday, so we did errands all morning today. Farmers’ market, Meyer Dairy, Holy Pilgrimage to the Club of St. Sam of Walton, Wal-Mart, then Nittany Meats. They were out of chickens, so we went to E. W. Hout’s.

The Meyer Dairy (this is a dairy state, you know) is on the other side of town, and we’d been in there once, but hadn’t bought anything. This time, we got a half-gallon of heavy cream, and two half-gallons of milk, in glass jugs, just like when I was a kid (except we had a milkman who delivered every morning). What’s bizarre is that the state price controls for dairy must not apply to private dairies — the first time, the milk is pricey because you pay for the jugs, but when you take them back, the milk, even in half-gallons, is a good deal cheaper than any store. So dairies can compete (Meyer gets a lot of business, from what we can tell), and without price controls. Fancy that.

When was the last time you saw one of those? And have you ever seen a half-gallon of heavy cream? We didn’t get cheese, butter, or ice cream. It can be -20 with the wind so strong the snow is falling horizontal, and people walk down the streets here licking on ice cream cones. It’s a miracle they’re not all 800 pounds. I’m not that acclimatized, and when we left the house this morning, it was painfully cold (it’s a balmy 30 now). I did not crave ice cream.

There’s always room for ice cream no matter what the temperature. I might have to chase it with hot chocolate, but there’s always ice cream. (Especially if you’re over there in State College.)

Looking at perhaps worse conditions here at the Aerie located in the Northern Tier in Tioga Co. We had our soup today too.

I’m jealous. I’ve never seen a half-gallon of cream. As for the glass bottles, Harzler’s here uses them (non-homogenized milk, mmm).

So here’s one back atcha: this AM we ate bacon from a fish smoker near Sebewaing MI. Best bacon I’ve ever eaten, though a little thick-cut, even for me.

I’m jealous, I have been trying to find chocalate milk in glass jars here in Utah but no luck
