Weather And Hokum

When I left the house this morning, it was 17 degrees. It’s 27 now. Heat wave.

So in my experiment on what’s available, I went where I was directed to get raw milk. I was directed, by the way, to the local hippy-dippy-do “organic” food store.

The raw milk was in half-gallons, at $4.79. Had it been raw milk, the pricing would have made sense: After all, if you separate cream from milk, you get more revenue than if you just sell it raw. So I bought one.

I was suspicious because there was no hint of separation. It was in a plastic jug, though, so I could have just not been able to see it. So I got it home, opened it up, and tried it.

It ain’t raw milk. First, the cream has been separated out. Second, it’s been pasteurized. I can tell because pasteurized milk has a very different taste — and this tastes just like the milk you buy in the store.

I can only deduce that for the morons who stop at this place, raw milk is “organic” milk, or free range milk, or fair trade milk, or something other than raw milk. Cause it ain’t.

I should have known, of course, that a bunch of vegans in birkenstocks wouldn’t have a clue. For a dollar less, I could have bought a gallon of milk. Live and learn.

More On Mitt

An agnostic weighs in after watching the speech:

Mitt Romney reminds me what I like about religion, Mike Huckabee reminds me what I don’t like about religion.

Mitt has my vote.

Not Willie Horton

I have seen the Dumond fiasco called Huckabee’s Willie Horton. Actually, it’s far worse.

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, Huckabee lobbied the Arkansas parole board to release Dumond, a convicted rapist. They did, and Dumond raped and murdered two women. So far, it’s Horton-esque.

Huckabee first claimed that it was Clinton. Oops, wrong. An aide who worked for him said no, it was Huckabee. Now, members of the parole board are confirming that yes, Huckabee lobbied them to release this animal on parole.

The timeline (with more details) can be found here.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Thanks to Dan Riehl, I found this article in the Arkansas Leader:

If you’re wondering how Gov. Huckabee’s hundreds of clemencies compare with neighboring states, get ready for a shocker.

Huckabee leads the pack.

He has issued more commutations and pardons than all of the six neighboring states combined.

Governors seldom reduce sentences in other states – and almost never for murderers serving life without parole or for rapists or for habitual drunk drivers, while in Arkansas it’s a regular habit with Huckabee.

Other governors use their clemency power only rarely, while Huckabee has made it routine. As we’ve told you before, he has issued more than 700 pardons and commutations during his eight years in office – more than 137 this year alone – and more than his three predecessors combined.

Here are the figures for neighboring states since 1996, when Huckabee took office (and keep in mind the population of these states is nearly 20 times ours):

>> Louisiana – 213.
>> Mississippi – 24.
>> Missouri – 79.
>> Oklahoma – 178.
>> Tennessee – 32.
>> Texas – 98 (in-cludes 36 inmates released because they were convicted on drug charges with planted evidence).

Total: 624 vs. Huckabee’s 703.

Governors in neighboring states almost never grant killers clemency, while Huckabee has commuted the sentences of a dozen murderers.

And according to this article, Huckabee refused to justify his clemencies.

This isn’t Willie Horton. This is far worse. This is a pattern. I don’t question Huckabee’s faith, or morals, or character. I do question his judgment, and although I didn’t think it possible, I think he’s even less fit to be the Commander-in-Chief than I had before.

This needs to be covered extensively. Fortunately, it’s already started, first on Good Morning America, and now, by MSNBC. At least one blog has made a very lame attempt to defend Huckabee and call into question the motivations of the networks.

Me, I don’t care what the motivations are, just as long as this story gets maximum coverage.

Teachers In Marketing

The history teacher of that honors student that didn’t know Lincoln was assassinated has obviously retired and gone into marketing — in New York City:

“Positively Exhausted”

Don’t Think So

In case you missed it, about a week ago, the website for Indoctrinate-U disappeared because a “major state university” was threatening action (you can read all about it here). Darren reports:

Apparently, the logo was too similar to the logo for Indiana University, and they threatened. Before deciding how to respond, Maloney took down the site and eventually decided to put it back up, sans logo. However, the university still wants beaucoup dinero. I’d love to see how that turns out.

Well, let’s see, shall we? Here’s the Indoctrinate-U logo:

And here’s the IU seal:

Or perhaps they meant the informal IU logo:

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not seeing any resemblance between the Indoctrinate-U logo and either the IU seal or logo. Oh wait — the Indoctrinate-U logo and the IU logo both have a U in them. So is IU claiming to own the copyright on the letter U now, or are they just being idiots and trying to milk some money out of Maloney?

Completely different colors. The IU sigil bears no resemblance to the Indoctrinate-U logo at all. The only similarity between the Indoctrinate-U and IU logos is the capital U. If they want some quick money, they’d be better of suing IUP. After all, IUP has “Indiana University” on their website (and materials), and they’re not even in Indiana! Worse, they have the same colors — they even call it crimson (I’m not sure if it’s cream and crimson, though).

I suspect they’re just being idiots, as usual, and in more ways than you may suspect. IU probably doesn’t want to call attention to themselves, at least not to this particular person. They may end up being skewered in the sequel (hint, hint). Maybe I’ll even tell him where the bodies are buried — and God knows I know where there are plenty of those.
