[...] And what did I say? Obama’s cultural problem is that he is a Cosmopolitanist. He not only has a cultural disconnection with the American character; he fears and despises it. We saw this with bittergate and arugulagate. We saw this with the “Why I don’t wear an American flag lapel pin” statement, and the pathetic attempts later to spin it away. Obama is out of touch, and it appears that he doesn’t even realize it. [...]

loved this post. you put into words some things that have been tickling the edge of my brain for a while. living in a town full of academic cosmopolitanists is no fun.

Professor,
This is an excellent post and since it connected to something I'd just posted (Obama The Great Pretender)I've linked to it. I found you through Mr. Conlon's Born Again Redneck. I'm bookmarking your blog and I'll return regularly. Also, a "right on" to Rory re his comment about the biggest example of racism in the campaign so far being the fact that African Americans are voting (over 90%) as a block for Obama.

Exactly. I am so glad I read your blog.

I fully expect some Hillary Clinton schadenfreude come November. I am amazed about how many people cry racism, but as near as I can figure out the biggest example of racism in the race is illustrated in how solidly African-American voters go for Obama.

This analysis is great stuff. I just found you through Harold Myerson's Washington Post blog list. I will put you in my RSS list and enjoy reading your future work.

One point I would add, as a heartfelt Jacksonian, is that this Obama digging up of race issues has deeply disturbed me. I realized today why: It is because I am genuinely fond of many black friends. I am a 71-year-old WASP. Some how the Cosmopolitans expect me to be anti-black. That makes me very mad.

I also think this snooty expectation that folks like me are anti-black is another reason Obama is in big trouble. It is possible that many Jacksonians like me would never vote for him because he is bringing a lot of new woe to blacks. I would vote for Condi Rice in a heartbeat.

Thanks for your superb analysis.
