A Question
So I had to pick up yeast at the store, and when I was looking for the expiration date, it hit me.
Is making bread cruel to yeast? Does PETA have a position paper on yeast? And if not, shouldn’t they?

Jeffrey Quick:
Commercial yeast is clearly the exploitation of another species, which is put into suspended animation where they could easily die. That’s probably more cruel than feeding them a nice last meal of flour, sugar etc and then giving them the Holocaust. Sourdough is preferable since the yeast’s participation is voluntary…but only if no starter is used and wild yeast are caught for each new batch.

In SF, I knew vegan nuts who would not eat honey or leavened bread or drink beer.
