Oh No
Just took a quick spin around the convention floor. We’re not saying the Democrats are unpatriotic or anything, but why do they need to have the Pledge of Allegiance on the Teleprompter?
Hat tip to Don.

Because under pressure it’s easy to fumble words. It also works as a placeholder so you don’t start reading ahead.
In school, they used to pick out students to do the morning announcements and pledge. I had done it many times, but one time instead of staring blankly at the wall (there was no flag in the room where the announcements were read) while I recited it, I started reading ahead to the day’s news. I didn’t even notice, but apparently I switched the words liberty and justice while reading.
Public speaking isn’t easy for most people. Even thought many politicians do find it a breeze, a convention is a much bigger spectacle than they are used to. I wouldn’t be shocked if they were to do the same thing at the Republican convention.
Also, teleprompters act as useful speed guides in that they will only release the next line at the right speed. One thing I have noticed is that when large groups of people recite something together, the main speaker with the microphone will finish ahead of the crowd, leading to a rather awkward pause that would look dreadful on TV.
